Statement:
The project named “High-Rise” is a photographic representation of experiences in and around 3 massive apartment buildings located in St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota. The initial inspiration for the work occurred while I was living in Minnesota and would drive past these 3 prominent architectural structures at night. These specific buildings are massive apartment buildings that are located a few miles from each other but all sit in isolation within their landscapes due to their massive size that dwarfs any other structures nearby. The lights in the windows project colors of beautiful light that emanate from the massive grid on the face of the buildings. The windows glow with different colors due to the tenants having different draperies hanging in the windows as well as varying light sources such as televisions and light bulbs of different kinds. The seductive beauty of the light pulled me in to wonder about the buildings and the people living inside with a deeper curiosity. These buildings have a soul to them that is created by the people inside.
