Switchyard II
exhibition description:
Zeitgeist celebrates the summer with a unique exhibition by eighteen multi-media artists representative of the burgeoning young contemporary art community in the Nashville and beyond.
The show entitled Switchyard features sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, and mixed media installation. As in last summer’s Switchyard shows, Zeitgeist continues to introduce emerging artists who are consistently working in the studio, are currently seeking new avenues for their work, and are new to the Nashville gallery scene. This summer show follows in this tradition.
Last year’s Switchyard shows opened to packed houses with the three receptions for the public. An entirely new group of shows by the 18 featured artists will open on July 14th. More new work and a second reception will occur August 4th for the first Switch. Same artists, new work, and another opening reception for the public to meet the artists. A final Switch will culminate in a third opening reception on August 25th. This year’s round of Switchyard shows will close on September 15th.
Many of the featured artists are new to Zeitgeist. Some are established artists whose names may be familiar and many are new artists to the Nashville area. Though most of the participating artists are from the Nashville area this year’s exhibitions will include artists from New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. These 18 artists were selected because their work demonstrates current contemporary trends in their respective media.
This is an invitational group show that highlights art and artists not regularly showing in commercial spaces. The work, which in some cases is more conceptual in nature, is more indicative of art shown in artist run alternative spaces and in the academic environments. Participating artists for this year’s installments are:
Caroline Allison/New York Scott Bonner/Nashville Dan Brawner/Nashville
Roger Clayton/Nashville Samuel Dunson/Nashville Beth Foley/Nashville
Patrick Graves/Memphis Jim Haynes/San Francisco AliciaHenry/Nashville
Barry Motes/Louisville John O’Connell/Nashville Meredith Spencer Mullins/Nashville
Jill Pope/Chicago Michael Pugh/Racine, WI Karla FossReilly/Montgomery, AL
Bethany Springer/New York City Carlton F. Wilkinson/Nashville Gayle Ruskin-White/Nashville
